Residency at TAKSU Gallery — Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia, 2008
In 2008 I undertook a two-month residency at TAKSU Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The residency culminated in a solo exhibition, Stream of Consciousness, marking my first sustained period of working internationally.
The opportunity included exhibiting not only in Kuala Lumpur but also in Singapore and Langkawi, placing the work within a broader Southeast Asian context. It was an important early moment in developing an international dimension to my practice.
Working within TAKSU’s space, I developed what would become Stream of Consciousness — an immersive installation created in direct response to the architecture of the gallery. Colour extended beyond the canvas, occupying walls and surfaces, shifting painting into spatial experience.
The residency expanded my understanding of how installation could function beyond a UK context. It required adaptability — in scale, logistics, and audience — while reinforcing a commitment to process-led making.
Looking back, the period marked a formative stage in the evolution of my site-responsive work.
